Giant monsters fighting giant robots is the setting for one of my favorite, awesomely bad movies of all time. It is so over the top and fantastic, I can't even. I just cant even! It came out the same year as the wine we are talking about (2013). To be fair, Pacific Rim the wine came out before Pacific Rim the movie. This is another one of those times that I saw the name of the wine and had to buy it. I am so susceptible to marketing! But seriously, giant monsters and giant robots fighting each other, how can you not be curious about the wine?! I am not saying I expected to uncork the bottle and unleash some epic robot vs. monster battle, but it would be irresponsible of me not to at least check, right?
So anyway, let's talk about 2013 Pacific Rim Dry Riesling. As I have said previously, Riesling has developed a bit of a bad reputation for being too sweet. To help with this, wine makers have started putting more information on their bottles. Many of them print a scale on the back label to illustrate where their wine falls on the sweetness scale According to the wine maker, this bottle falls under in the dry range. You can also look at the percentage of alcohol by volume. In this case it is 12.5%. As long as it is above 9%, the wine should not taste sugary sweet. The back label is also covered in various positive reviews and accolades. I am always a bit wary when I see that. I find it strange that so many wines these days get over 85 points. Not every wine can be the best tasting thing ever. Wine ratings are another discussion for another day. Back to Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim is located in Washington state. Most of the wines they produce are made from Riesling, so they should know what they are doing. Their 2013 dry Riesling is pleasant, and for around $10, it is hard not to recommend. While not my favorite Washington State Riesling, it is well balanced, refreshing and pleasant. It has a nice flowery aroma, low acidity (not tart or bitter), and is very fruity. For those of you enjoying peach, pear, and apricot, this is a good wine for you. My own personal preference for Riesling tends toward the mineral taste you sometimes find, which is why I am not as enthusiastic about this wine as I have been about others. However, for the price this is a good buy. It would certainly be a nice bottle to enjoy during the warm summer months. Especially if any of your summer activities include watching giant monsters fight giant robots. Sorry! I couldn't help it. Pacific Rim is a great movie! Okay, I am done.
To summarize: Pacific Rim Dry Riesling is a nice wine for the money
