There are some wines you can just count on. Year after year, the wine stays consistent and and of similar quality. I love finding these wines and having them on hand. Rosemount Estate Shiraz is one of my favorites. Year after year, I have enjoyed the quality, price and dependability this wine offers. While not likely to wow anyone with an unusual flavor or bouquet, it can be counted on in a pinch to be good. This wine is drinkable young and there is no worry about it being too closed or needing some age to be approachable.
I first tried this wine years ago at a friend's house. It is another in a long line of examples of my close-mindedness. I was going through my don't-want-anything-but-Burgundy phase, but my Southerness prevented me from turning down a glass of wine offered by my hostess. Thankfully, I didn't ask what it was before trying it, if I had, my unconscious bias may have ruined everything. It was a a very pleasant wine, and I arrogantly assumed I must have converted my friend to drinking Burgundy. You can imagine how surprised I was when she told me it was Shiraz. Not only that, but I assumed she must have meant Syrah, because of course this wine was French (Shiraz and Syrah are the same grape but each name carries regional and taste implications). You can image my reaction when I was told this wine was Australian. Apparently, Australia is home to more than just beautiful people, and terrifying sharks and spiders. They can make wine! They can make good wine! Thankfully, I got over myself and started buying and enjoying this wine from time to time.

Australia has a lot to offer when it comes to wine. If you are surfing the wine aisle in the grocery store, you may immediately think of Yellow Tail. There is more to Austrialian wine than just the cute kangaroo labels. South Australia, where our Rosemount Estate Shiraz comes from (McLaren Vale), is the largest wine producing region. Currently, Shiraz makes up the bulk of Australian wine, but that could change in the future. You can also find Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillion, Pinot Noir, Grenache, and much more!
Now that I have advertised Australia as a respectable producer of wine (Looking for your next vacation, why not Australia? Just kidding!), let's get back to our Shiraz. What is the 2015 Rosemount Estate Shiraz like? One of the coolest things about it (and a lot of Shiraz) is the inky color. It is some dark wine! I could make a joke about an Octopus and Squid drinking wine because you know, inky color, but I wont, that's just silly. The point is, I like the color! On the nose you get some nice berry. I know I am always talking about berries, but this time it is not just dark cherries, it is also blueberries. Perhaps a touch of plum too. The blueberry flavor is there on the palate too, and perhaps a hint of chocolate, but that could have just been me. I love chocolate. Chocolate is great. Anyway, back to the wine. It is a very smooth, pleasant wine. As I said before, it isn't life altering, it is just good. A wine you can count on, and for only $9. It is a nice red to bust out when it has been a long day, or a maybe you have last-minute company coming, or it has been a rough day at work, or maybe just because it is Wednesday and you see the "Wine Wednesday" thing being posted all over social media (my bad, I am pretty sure I do that too). Whatever the occasion (or non-occasion), this is a dependable wine. And as it turns out, dependability can be delicious!
