Snow in The South? Oh, the Irony!

Oh the weather outside is frightful (Seriously, it snowed several inches in GA)

But the fire is so delightful (so is this glass of Pinot Noir) And since we've no place to go (because everything shuts down in the South at the first flake) Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

A snowstorm swept the south recently, which is crazy because it rarely snows here, and certainly not in December. It was a legitimate milk and eggs emergency! I didn't take the weather report seriously so thankfully I avoided the horde of people bombarding the dairy aisle at the grocery store. But I was stocked up on the most important cold weather supply, wine! And thankfully, it was appropriately named for the occasion. Today, we are going to talk about 2015 Irony Wines Pinot Noir. See what I did there? Irony. Because it snowed in the south. Or maybe Irony because I didn't take the weather report seriously and it actually did snow. Or maybe because I was legitimately out of eggs. Let's just go with it snowing in the South.

Irony Wines are made from grapes grown around California's Central Coast wine region, specifically Monterey. It is a blend specifically chosen lots of Pinot Noir from vineyards around Monterey. The name Irony comes from third generation wine makers Jay and Chris Indelicato. After helping their grandfather around the vineyard, they swore they would never be winemakers themselves. Yet, they both eventually returned to the family vines and are making wine. Ironic. The idea behind Irony is to make an "honest expression" of each varietal. I imagine that means finding a unique blend of each varietal that makes the drinker think to themselves 'Ah, now that is a delicious Central Coast Pinot Noir.' Their wines are a reflection of that particular grape when grown in capable hands and in Central Coast, California conditions.

So what is the result of all this Irony? A great California Pinot Noir for under $20! This wine is fragrant and delicious. On the nose you get dark cherries and dried fruit. The flavor is fruit forward with red berries leading the way. There is a touch of nut (almond) on the palette to balance out the fruit. The tannins are mild and the wine has a great texture and balance to it. Overall, a very nice California Pinot Noir.

I highly recommend 2015 Irony Pinot Noir. This is a great wine (and aptly named if you are in the south) for a snowy night, or to enjoy at a holiday party or meal. For around $12, this wine makes it on my list of go-to reds. A great value for a nice Pinot Noir. Even the Elf on the Shelf at my house likes it!

Stay tuned for more posts about Irony. The wine, not the literary device.
